Did you know that the leading causes of death among Latinx include heart disease and cancer and that Latinx are 50 percent more likely to die from diabetes than whites.
Latinx also have high rates of obesity (an estimated 47%) and diabetes (12.1%) in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S. and afflicts people of color at higher rates, according to the CDC and the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Among the Latinx community, Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans have the highest rates of diabetes,
- Mexican: 13.8 percent
- Puerto Rican: 12 percent
- Cubans: 9 percent)
- Central and South Americans: 8.5 percent
